Testing FF 91: Extreme Cold Testing

Seasonal tires and snow chains have long been aids to providing better traction on slippery, winter roads, but even the most experienced drivers know these solutions are only half-measures at best. True cold weather safety starts with vehicles using the latest electronic traction and stability control technology to help ensure driver safety and user confidence.  

Faraday Future engineers took FF 91 prototypes to Northern Minnesota to test and gather data in multiple areas, including: component durability, battery functionality, traction control setting, powertrain, and overall vehicle ride and handling in cold weather conditions. 

Cold Weather Vehicle Control

FF 91 uses Adaptive Traction Control System (ATCS) technology to aid vehicle control on low friction surfaces such as ice and snow. The ATCS technology allows the motors to compensate for traction loss by adjusting torque applied to the wheels based on vehicle speed, throttle input, and turning angle. 

FF 91 also features a Dynamic Vehicle Control (DVC) system which intelligently integrates torque vectoring, four-wheel steering, and semi-active damping to deliver precision handling for a rewarding driving experience, regardless of weather conditions. 

During vehicle testing, FF engineers logged tire conditions, speed, steering wheel angles, suspension travel and other data to gather how much energy the motor-drive unit was required to deliver to any specific wheel. With the aid of advanced sensor systems, we are adding extra layers when the car encounters understeering or oversteering conditions to allow the driver to quickly regain control of the vehicle. 

Battery Performance 

In order to maintain maximum vehicle range and performance, it’s important that battery cells maintain stabilized temperatures at all times. In cold weather, low battery temperatures affect battery performance, which may cause a slower charging rate. 

Heat is also a major concern for high performance battery cells. The more rapid a battery is discharged, the more heat it generates which is a known issue with fast-charging battery packs. In order to combat both cold and hot temperature issues, FF engineers developed a refined battery system that immerses the battery pack cells in non-conductive cooling fluid. This thermal fluid helps to insulate the battery cells to maintain proper operating temperatures to deliver sufficient discharge energy, range, and longevity.
